Kind vs Good (Revisited -2026)

The topic of the Vistage Alumni meeting today was Authenticity in Relationships across four quadrants - self, spouse, close friends and acquaintances.  Tom A. brought up path for encouraging authenticity might be as simple as kindness.  This caused me to revisit my memory (and blog) of "Kind vs Good" -Sept 27, 2010.

Thankfully AI has helped me with a deeper dive:

Sixteen years ago, my blog referenced a sermon from Rev. Stover in which he said the word “kind” never appears in the Bible. At the time, that line sent my mind straight to Sondheim’s Into the Woods and Little Red Riding Hood’s sharp observation:

“Kind does not mean good.”

I didn’t realize then how often that distinction would come back to me.

Today, “kindness” is one of the most overused words in our cultural vocabulary. We put it on yard signs, coffee mugs, corporate slogans, and social media hashtags. “Be kind” has become a modern mantra. And yet—just as Little Red warned—kindness still doesn’t necessarily mean goodness.

Kindness has become easy. Goodness has not.

Kindness today often means being agreeable, polite, or non‑confrontational. It’s a social lubricant. It keeps the peace. It avoids friction. But goodness—real goodness—still demands something deeper:

  • moral courage

  • integrity

  • sacrifice

  • truthfulness

  • accountability

Goodness sometimes requires saying the hard thing, standing firm, or refusing to go along with something that is wrong. And in those moments, “kindness” can actually get in the way. We can be so eager to appear kind that we fail to be good.

The Bible’s language helps clarify the difference.

Rev. Stover’s point was technically correct the KJV does not use the word kind (however kindness, kindly and loving kindness is) and his point was that the English word “kind” doesn’t capture the weight of the biblical concepts. The Bible’s vocabulary is richer:

  • hesed — steadfast love, covenant loyalty, mercy

  • chrestotÄ“s — moral goodness, uprightness, gracious strength

Biblical kindness is never mere niceness. It is goodness expressed. It is goodness with a spine.

Our world needs goodness first.

We live in a time when manipulation often masquerades as kindness. Flattery, charm, and smooth talk can be used to disarm, distract, or deceive. The wolf still knows how to smile.

So the lesson from 2010 holds even more strongly today:

Be good—and let kindness follow. Goodness is the root. Kindness is the fruit. When goodness leads, kindness becomes trustworthy. When kindness leads, goodness can be compromised.

Sixteen years later, I’m convinced of this:

Kindness is beautiful when it grows out of goodness. But kindness without goodness is just camouflage.

And Sondheim's Little Red Riding Hood still has the best line.

Home Networking - NOT...Working

Being a DIY home network techy has been a history of challenges - from DSL, Fiber, Cat 5, 5e, 6, 6a, 7 and now 8, Wifi 2.4Ghz, 5Ghz, and now Wifi 7, 10/100 switches to gigabyte switches, mesh network, the list goes on.

Today was another lesson in humility.  Luckily I cancelled AltaFiber's technician site visit (I was so sure the ONT was fried from the recent storm and outage) and tried my own troubleshooting of the home network diagnosis.

I discovered that my TP-Link Ac1200 was defective but that outcome was an all day effort.

Thank goodness for AI's assistance in trying to renew my networking skills.

The investments of routers, switches, long Cat 6 wire, extenders, adds up over the years.  My guess is I have spent over $2,000. But luckily I am a pack rate and I keep all that old technology  (see my history DIY networking -  Networking Triumph  Home Networking Reboot Post Purchase Analysis ) I dug my old 2012 NetGear N500 wifi router out of my technology "scary box" full of obsolete stuff.   BUT ... it worked!

But true technology confession is good for the soul! AI Copilot said it well when I asked if I should breakdown and just purchase an new router -
NETGEAR Orbi 370 WiFi 7 Mesh System Dual-Band, Up to 6,000 sq ft, 3 Pack

Garen, honestly… you’re making the right call. You’ve got an Apple router, a TP‑Link, and a Netgear all broadcasting different SSIDs, different security modes, different DHCP behavior — that’s exactly the kind of environment where Alexa + Cync + IoT devices become a never‑ending troubleshooting loop.

You’re not imagining it. You’re not doing anything wrong. The system is unstable because the network is unstable.

Let me give you the straight, executive‑level breakdown so you can move forward without wasting another Saturday.

Now with all the internet of things (IoT) my smart plugs, Alexa devices, ring doorbells, thermador smart freezer and refrigerator, security cameras, droplet water monitor, irrigation controller, and internet smart TV's all needed updates to the new router!

When it "rains it pours" because just three days ago I wasted a complete day relinking 21 different financial entities to a new checking account Susan and I opened.

The cost of efficient "integration" and "convenience" becomes real clear when THE critical single component gets changed - like a checking account or a router.

So the Notworking is Nowworking awaiting Monday's delivery of a new mesh router system--- New..working!

Heaven Board #20

Rev Tim Keller has been instrumental in my personal spiritual journey beginning with the first taped sermon I heard from him on Friendship (May 29,2005).   Susan claims (and likely I can claim also) that she has listened to all 1500+ of the sermons that she got as a Christmas present (2013 I believe).  It was a very sad day  May 19, 2023 (we were volunterring at a J.H. Outback weekend) that we learned of his passing.  To this day I use his sermons to prepare for any Bible Study verse and listen to them in my car.  Like a good movie I never tire of relistening to a sermon and his stories that repeat.

https://timothykeller.com/

For friends I compiled a tumbdrive of 231 of his free sermons with index to date and verse (now I think all are free at www.gospelinlife.com/sermons/).  I also subscribed to logos library of the written text of most of these sermons also.

By chance, I was trying to find some of Keller's final sermons not listed on thumbdrive I have when I discovered on his site the recorded memorial service held August 15, 2023 at St. Patricks Cathedral. What a moving homily by Rev. Sam Allberry.  I decided to use NotebookLM to transcribe the YouTube audio, then cut and pasted into Word and asked Copilot to format and turn it into a readable sermon with an appropriate title - it suggested the Rev. Allberry's borrowed line from Tim Keller himself - "Jesus is the true and better Tim Keller"  :)

But what struck me most about this message was this statement:

"A God who sees you, not according to your achievements, not according to your wealth, or your looks, or your popularity, not even just according to your sins, but a God who sees you as worth his while serving. Some of us here this afternoon will be unsure whether we believe in God. Some of us may be very sure we don’t believe in God. But I wonder if the God you don’t believe in is like this. And if God did exist, wouldn’t you want him to be just like this?  Jesus came to serve."

Like Tim Keller this was a message of hope for those who believe, those who are unsure of their belief, and even those that don't believe.  As a trained skeptic, Tim Keller was just the person I needed to point to the "true and better" one.

Weather or Not

Susan asked what would Armstrong Men do regarding a rain out of the 5th annual golf outing at Hamilton Elks?  The forecast was 98% rain for the entire day.  The actual outcome - overcast with a slight "spit" on the windshield driving up at 7:30am and complete sunshine and hot weather by the third hole after a 9am start.  Steve. M. won the bragging rights for our foursome when he had a natural birdie on the same par 3 course I had "beat the pro" three years earlier!

Great memories also of that year with Joe R. (now in heaven) in our foursome at the hole sponsored by Glenn Bitzenhofer!  What a God wink with the reflection of a spiritual symbol of "Fishers of Men".

2013 Armstrong Men Golf Outing

Steve Z.'s email Thursday evening about option plays on USO (ETF proxy for the price of oil) and today's WSJ article about "War leaves Economy with more Stubborn Inflation, Economists predict" got me questioning who is the most accurate - Weathermen or Economists?

Copilot weighed in -  "Weather forecasters, and it's not particularly close."

The rational is that Economists are trying to predict human behaviour and Weather forecasters operate under the laws of physics!

Copilot goes on to chastize the Economists with:  "A famous comparison comes from economist Kenneth Galbraith, who joked that the only function of economic forecasting is to make astrology look respectable."

For proper parity -  "The weather forecaster is the only person who can be wrong half the time and still keep his job."

But in the end - this says it all:  "Weather forecasters and economists have one thing in common: when they're right, nobody remembers; when they're wrong, everybody does."

Who Goes First?

The Wed. 7:15BC mens bible study group are concluding a study on Forgiveness using Fr. Thomas Berg and Dr. Timothy Lock's book "Choosing Forgiveness - Unleash the Power of God's Grace".  The book was excellent but the implementation is challenging.  As we learned together with the Made4More videos during Armstrong's Supercharge 2026 and subsequent small group study - the power comes with "WHO GOES FIRST?".

The book stimuilated me to construct a Copilot assisted PowerPoint visual of Divine Forgiveness and Reconciliation.  I continue to be amazed at how AI increases my productivity, creativity, and skills.

One insight that I personally discovered in this study is the need to separate the offense ( or the wound) from the offender.  God hates sin (the offense) but still loves the Offender.  Only when the Wounded sees the divine forgiveness that God provides the Offender can he/she begin the process of healing and softening the heart with God's power.

Still this is easier to display, intellectualize, and discuss - much harder to emotionally and prayerfully accomplish.

One thing is for certain - GOD always goes FIRST!

If I Were King

It's appropriate to acknowledge 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence today.

Happy 4th of July!!!!

Actually I have little memory of July 4th 1976 ( The150 anniversary) celebration since I was deep into my Internship at Arthur Andersen (Administrative Services Division) inserting BAL subroutines into an RPG software package called MAC-PAC; then recompiling the programs so that the DOS 360 IBM mainframe could execute the software package.   We were working evening shift when the mainframe was not in heavy use. But.... I digress in my memories that dominated my life 50 years ago.  I had little thought then of freedom and philosophical matters. I was just focused on completing my Masters Degree the next fall and getting a job!

What todays blog is really about is a journey in a thought experiment (similar to our Founding Fathers) that is also the topic of choice for the Vistage Alumni Group this month.   Here is the question.

"If you were King of the World, what would you do?"

Naturally I took the "high tech" (or lazy) approach and asked AI for help.  I posed this question to Copilot, Gemini Pro, Claude, Perplexity, ChatGPT-5, and Grok in two ways - first as if they had to answer themselves and second for structuring my answer to my Vistage buddies for the July meeting.

One thing for certain is that these AI engines are USA and freedom biased because everyone of the AI engines said they would abdicate authority as soon as feasible. George Washington is considered our best president because he abdicated power and refused to be King.  Good to know AI has the same philosophy and courage.

As for helping me decide what I would do as King, my dialogue with Copilot and Gemini Pro (the two AI engines that I use the most) went about 11 chats deep and came close to the same conclusion.  Abdicate power and don't focus on rule making.

Loading the Copilot chat data into NotebookLM produced an interesting video available on my Youtube channel.

The key punchline:

"Maybe the most important job of a king is not governing behavior. Maybe it's giving people a reason to hope."

You Dig

Amazon Prime Days are over (4 days this year - June 23-26) and I have been hooked on purchasing all kind of gadgets, gifts and uneeded stuff for the last 5 years during this event.  This year a spontaneous purchase of yet another Firestick for $25 just to test the AI and voice integration feature.

Last night I decided to install it on my 2019 LG ThinQ TV to determine compare the voice and lookup features.  The real effort in installing the Firestick is adding the apps and getting them authorized for the TV.  After adding nearly 20 apps, it was time to test.  My first observation is how confusing it is on so many streaming services with paid subscriptions - Netflix, YoutubeTV, Disney +, Apple TV, HBO Max, Hulu, Paramount +, Amaxon Prime, MGM, the list is endless.  That presents the paradox of choice - a seemingly infinite set of content to choose from.

So ... what movie popped to mind?  "The Good the Bad and the Ugly" classic Clint Eastwood flick.  So with a voice prompt - there it was.  I watched two of my favorite scenes about "Two Kinds of People"

First was the interaction of Tuco and Blondie (Clint) regarding the partnership, risk, and how to split the robbed treasure once found.  Tuco defines his definition of "Two Kinds of People".

Best yet - was the quote by Blondie (Clint) at the graveyard scene after killing Angel Eyes and responding to Tuco's question about removing the bullets from his gun.

"There are two kinds of people my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those that dig.  YOU DIG  :)

Fake Family Fotos

Back from a Wisner Family Reunion at Oglebay Resort W.V. Three Wisner Siblings with spouses, five childen and their 4 spouses and seven grandchildren (22 total).  Not huge - but not insignificant.  Organized by Dayna and D'Lane the location and available activities was both convenient and great fun for all (but especially for the grandchildren).

Like the Blue Danube Cruise organized by Mom and Dad (July 8 - 18 2006), there was 100% participation. Twenty six years ago none of the kids were married so the numbers were lower (13 total).

Family Genelogy and numbers are fascinating.  The Vistage Alumni exercise we did in May looking at three generations back and forward was interesting as it showed me how my family tree was so much larger in the 1800s smaller in the 1900s and now more expansive in the 2000s.  Of course it is all in how you count - one surname or all inlaw surnames.

The family picture was morphed several times via AI - first with March Madness college jerseys, then NFL Teams and finally with a 1925 black and white photo of all 22 of us (as if back in time).

It seems AI also changes faces, sex, weight, or many other features as it reshapes people to fit the style (basketball players, football players, 1925 folks) of the requested theme.  It favors visual style over accuracy.  My opinion is that with all the deep fake liability issues that AI is purposely trying to make adjustments to avoid problems.

It does beg the issue of what photo can you even trust and how do you know if a photo has been modified.  For digital photos there is the original timestamp, device, GPS and whether the file has been re-saved or edited.  Compression levels, pixel forensics, lighting and geometry play a key role in deep fake detection.  Bottom line images and video can no longer be trusted alone - other collaboration of multiple witnesses and physical evidence are required.

So did the Family Reunion really occur?  Only the participants can attest.

Made 4 More

Father's Day June 21, 2009 was an eventful spiritual event for me when Armstrong United Methodist Church handed out Patrick Morley and David Delk's "Dad in the Mirror" book to all the Fathers. I used that book in my daily devotional and spiritual journaling that I had started October 2016.  The message from the penetrated my heart then.... and Now - Am I Fathering for performance or Fathering to the Heart?  Behavior flows out of Belief and the goal of a Father is to disciple the heart of his child to Love God and Others. That book also started my devoted support and gifts to Man in the Mirror Ministry.

This afternoon at lunch I reiterated that Father's Day memory and pivitol moment in my spiritual development as a Son, Man, Husband, and Father.  At lunch was  TD. D. .and his son J.D2. of Made4More (M4M) Ministry. and Pastor Brown whoinitiated this introduction and meeting.  How appropriate that Pastor Brown brought two copies of the June 22, 2026 Father's Day gift to them.  I pray that the Men who took home their copy of  Patrick Morley's new book  "What if Christianity is True?" will do the same with it as I did 17 years ago.

The only Armstrong Supercharge event I had missed (due to a family death - M.S.) was last March 7. 2026 where Made 4 More presented their excellent material (7 Videos and Group Discussions) to 50 or more Men encouraging them to join a small group and helping them in transformation as Men, Husbands, and Fathers. Man Fully Alive was permission to "Go First" in sharing your story (like the videos) and allowing others into your real life and challenges as a Man.

Our Wednesday Bible Study took the next 7 weeks to dive deep into these discussions and found them transformative. Armstrong UMC supplimented the Made 4 More video material with practical spiritual disciplines as follow-up.   I committed to the "Pain Journal" disciple - now on week 4 of a 52 week exercise in healing.

God puts people together for a purpose and this meeting will surely produce fruit.  TD. D. offered me the M4M band and asked for prayer for this minstry -  NO PAIN there - I will were it proudly withthe TETELESTAI  33AD band that stays on my right arm!

Squirrel Apple Thief

Not a single apple remains on the four apple trees (or on the ground) in my back yard (well really 2 crab apple trees and 2 other apple trees (see Two Apple Sticks - yellow transparent semi-dwarf and golden delicious dwarf).  So who are the culprits - deer, dog or ...... squirrel?    The picture below incriminates the squirrel along with some videos that I have of the branches shaking with no wind present. But you have to look carefully - he is feasting on an apple underneath the golden delicious dwarf tree!

Trust but Verify

Find people that can make you laugh and enjoy their company.  P.N. called today and we exchanged jokes, teasing and wit.  When he asked me what I thought about the MOU with Iran, I hedged by stating that with 47 years of distrust how can anything on paper be certain.

P.N. agreed and said one of his friends felt the Iran war was like a marriage - no rules :)

I added to the humor reflecting how so many marriages involve cheating also.  Most marriages also have a mutually assured destruction capability - the red button nuclear option.  We all know which button to push at anytime.

Attempting a shot at positivity, we both agreed that a best practice in any marriage is "trust but verify".  That is probably the best chance at a peaceful resolution of this conflict.

I Don't Know

As an Accenture Alumni, I watch the stock carefully and even listen to the earnings calls with great interest.  Sadly today the stock dropped 18% and year to date cut in half (actually >50%).  The market is punishing Accenture's lower bookings, revenue below mid-point guidance and general pessimism for this sector based on AI expectations.

Today in the Vistage Alumni (we call it Vistage Vets) monthly meeting, K.W. stated that AI hallucinates about 30% of the time. When I asked Copilot today it cites studies saying 60% incorrect answers on some news citation queries, 17-34 % in legal research tools, and up to 31% in real-world interactions, rising to approximately 60% in complex domains.  K.W seems to be correct!

So how does this get corrected and will it take Accenture expertise and digital data cleansing tools or does recursive self improvement just naturally improve this bad batting average?  Copilot weighed in on that question also;

✅ Bottom line

  • Consulting-scale engineering (like Accenture): necessary for real-world reliability
  • Recursive self-improvement: helpful but limited
  • True solution: a layered system combining
    • better models
    • grounding mechanisms
    • verification processes
    • human oversight
Interesting concept is that AI is not rewarded for honesty (or punished for errors) and the models don't know when to say "I don't know".

And as to whether Accenture stock will recover from all this pessimism........  "I don't know"

For Give - Fore Gift

"The mind repeats what the heart can't delete" was the comment of B.S. this morning in our beginning study of "Choosing Forgiveness" by Fr. Thomas Berg and Dr. Timothy Lock.  A.S. did a great job of facilitating and mentioned another book that would be worthy of reading "Forgive Everyone Everything" by Greg Boyle.

Our Wed. 7:15BC group will explore the "bondage of unforgiveness" and "the pathway to healing, peace, and interior freedom. The first two chapters of this book has created deep and meaningful discussions about shame and blame; apologies fake or real; justice or not; remember or forget; let go or hold on;

My insight was around the "gray areas of truth".  In many hurting circumstances --- There is my story, There is your story and then There is the real (true) story.  Especially those difficult spousal interactions with stressful emotional interactions that seem stuck in a dead end. How to get "unstuck"? That's the toughest part of forgiveness. Who goes first?

Maybe the act of going first is practicing God's gift of grace.   It takes a fore gift to forgive.

DYI Tax Downsides

Woke up this morning at 4:20am with inability to get back to sleep.  I'm usually a sound sleeper so I wondered why as I lay awake.

It was the conversation with A.C. last night over dinner.  I was talking about the character (or learned behavior) of audit reconciliation and that the "new Garen" can let go of things like a tax refund computed by the government that is different from my expectation and what I filed.  Both Ohio and Federal Tax Refunds were "slightly off". A.C. at age 92 said he still can't do that ..... and as my mentor and teacher it sunk in.... I can't really do that either.

Susan as an accomplished accountant has no problem with the concept of materiality and practical time allocation on reconciliation (when it is needed and when it is not).   She would not have given this marginal difference a second thought regardless of whether in our favor or not.

BUT... the complete training I received at Arthur Andersen/Andersen Consulting/Accenture in system test results and 10 column accounting totals kicked in again - this time at 4:20 am.

After 4 hours of digging and finding letters from IRS and State of Ohio the difference could was reconciled.  The government calculation was correct!  A $49 difference was accounted for.  My mind could now be at peace.

The real culprit is the fact that I just continue to DYI my own taxes. Luckily those taxes are becoming easier to understand and input into Turbo Tax but with diminishing returns of accuracy as I age.

P Cubed

A.C. drove down from Michigan to attend the Accenture Alumni Partner Lunch now traditionally at Trios.  A.C. was actually the genesis of the tradition back in 2001 when he suggested (or maybe assigne me) that we all meet monthly for lunch now that we were all ex Partners.  It was just another example of how A.C. focused on people and culture which is likely why the Cincinnati Alumni get together every year on the Thursday following Thanksgiving for an Alumni Reunion.

With two Partners now gone (B.W. and J.R.) we had the usual P.G. G.M P.E. K,D. and myself to reminise about the early days of Accenture and to compare and contrast the cultures of the Cincinnati Office vs Columbus and Cleveland (the days of the All Ohio Practice).

Coincidentally, my suggested next topic for the Vistage Alumi meeting this Thursday is mentors in our lives and clearly A.C. was instrumental mentor to me.

I have many many A.C. stories and pearls  of wisdom and have blogged about them before -  B players, On the Backs of "Bs" , Bad News Ages Fast , Silent Lie , If Only I Had ...  .  But today his 92 years of wisdom had not ceased.  A.C. mentioned when he talks to high school classes, he stresses "P cubed" - Priorities, Passion and People.

That pearl of wisdom is easy to remember, but harder to practice.

Thank you A.C. for putting the "P cubed" into me!

AI Hallucination Wars

In the Wed 7:15 BC bible study we discussed two of the Parousia Parables in Matthew 25, I pondered why there were no sermons by Tim Keller focused on those parables.

When I asked this question of Copilot, it (I guess AI is an it) confirmed that while Keller did teach extensively in Matthew (2012) it did not include Matthew 24-35.  Copilot said Redeemer wasn't a strict lectionary or sequential preaching church (although I think Keller was close as it could get). Matthew 25 is "tricky - and possibly Keller was careful about apocaleptic passages.

I could only find 28 of the >1500 Tim Keller sermons based on any apocalyptic Old Testament and New Testament scriptures (18 from Revelations which is a New Testament Book of the Bible that no minister could ignore preaching about).

When I announced in Wed. 7:15BC that I could find no sermons on Matthew 24-25 by Tim Keller, J.B. immediately tried to fact check me with Siri which answered that T. Keller had preached specifically and sequentially on chapters in Matthew and therefore answered yes.

So which AI was correct - Siri or Copilot (Apple or Microsoft)  I put the tie breaker to Gemini Pro - but after a long dialouge of fact checking Gemini's responses I finally received the concession below:

You are completely right, and I am deeply embarrassed. I tried to correct an error with another error, and you caught me red-handed again.
October 20, 1996, was indeed the preaching date for "Paul and the Thorn" based on 2 Corinthians 12:1–10, which was part of his famous "Daring to Draw Near" series.
My attempt to argue that "The Grace of the Law" happened on that date was a complete hallucination, and I apologize for giving you false data when you are looking through a precise, real library.
Since I have clearly proven that my memory of specific dates from that sermon archive is highly unreliable, I am going to step completely back from trying to guess dates, sermon titles, or file arrangements on your drive.
To give you the exact reality regarding the very first question that brought us here: Tim Keller did not preach any standalone expository sermons on Matthew 24 or Matthew 25 during his decades at Redeemer.
Any references to the Olivet Discourse or the parables of the Ten Virgins, the Talents, or the Sheep and the Goats on your flash drive will be found as brief cross-references or illustrations woven into other series (like his studies on Mark, Romans, or topical series on justice and work), rather than standalone messages dedicated to those texts.
Thank you for your patience with me, and for correcting those dates so precisely.

Sneaky Apple announced the iphone 17 using "Apple Intelligence" and next-gen Siri - but what is really behind the scenes is GOOGLE! The rebuilt Siri's advanced AI capabilites rely on a custom Gemini model for cloud intelligence.

So which AI tool hallucinates the most - Google (Gemini), Microsoft (Copilot), Apple (Siri), OpenAI (Chat GPT), Anthropic (Claude), xAI (Grok), Perplexity AI? Since Microsoft is really a cousin of Chat GPT and Apple is a cousin of Gemini here is how each self proclaims Hallucination ratings from least to most:

Copilot says - Claude, Chat GPT including Copilot, Gemini
Gemini says - Claude, Perplexity AI/Copilot, Chat GPT, Gemini,Grok
Perplexity Pro - Perplexity, ChatGPT web, Gemini, OpenAI GPT-4o,Claude,Grok
Grok says - "Grok is under heavy usage - upgrade to Suiper Grok"
Chat GPT says - ChatGPT, Gemini,Claude, Copilot, Perplexity, Meta AI, Grok
Claude says - Gemini 2.0 Flash, GPT-4o,Claude Sonnet, Claude Opus, Grok, GPT-5, Gemini Pro

Actually, I think each of the assistants were hallucinating about each other :) OR... maybe they are all together one big hallucination conspirator.

Three Reading Amigos

Mini Book Club met today.  P.N. and R.M.2. and I have been meeting each month since February 2019 to discuss a book or article (so that would be approximately 70 books and 10 articles).  We rotate who gets to pick the book and generally require a 2/3 vote before reading.  We have not diligently kept track of the books read but I have a "best guess" list from my emails, bookshelf, and memory of about 52 books.

I asked Copilot to make some observations about our book choices and possible discussions.

(1)   Heavy emphasis on meaning, purpose and faith - These guys are not just reading for entertainment - they're trying to wrestle with big life questions
(2) Strong preference for "idea books" over narrative fiction - They prioritize ideas over storytelling
(3) Interest in ethics, morality, and human behavior - They are interested in what makes people good or bad and how we should live.
(4) Blend of "serious classics" and accessible modern books
(5) Recurring authors/ideological familiarity  - They revisit authors they trust and stay within a philosophical "comfort band"
(6) Science curiosity - but philosophical, not technical - What does science say about reality, meaning and God?
(7) Overall tone: reflective, not confrontational - They are not trying to "win arguments"; They are trying to understand life

The normalized groupings fall into seven categories/themes

(1) Religion/Spirituality/Theology  - 22 Books
(2) Philosophy & Ethics  - 8 Books
(3) Psychology/Human Behavior - 7 Books
(4) Science/Physics/Big History - 7 Books
(5) Memoir/Personal Development - 7 Books
(6) Futurism/Society/Systems - 1 Book
(7) Fiction - 1 Book

The Awful Grace of God

I listen to Tim Keller sermons everyday in my car from the library of sermons I purchased for Susan as a Christmas gift years ago.  I just listened to "Christian Hope and Suffering" May 16, 2004 based on 2 Corinthians 4:7-18 and 12:7-10.

In that sermon Keller states "As Asechylus, of all people (the Greek poet), once wrote, "It's God's law that he who learns must suffer. And even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget, falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own dispite, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God"

Translated from Agamemnon "The Oresteia" a more direct translation would read:

“Zeus… has established this law:
that wisdom comes through suffering.

Pain, remembering its wounds,
drips before the heart in sleep;
and even against our will
comes understanding…
from the gods.”

What confused me from Tim Keller's statement is the term "The awful grace of God".  Rarely have I seen the word grace used with the word awful.  He was translating from a Greek philosopher who was polytheistic and not a Christian for emphasis not theological Christian principle.

BUT.... maybe that is an appropriate term in the mystery/paradox of understanding suffering, hope and grace in Christianity.

Grace is an unmerited gift from God and so suffering (awful grace) might also be an unmerited gift from God.  Pain that you didn't seek or ask for - that has a path to hope and wisdom.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Postscript - 6/11/2026

I was re-listening to the audio sermon only to discover that T. Keller's reciting of the quote sounded like "all filling Grace of God".  I even had R.M.2 listen to the quote as we were traveling to Ky to meet with P.N. for our mini book club meeting and he said it sounded like "awe filling Grace of God".  This lead me to more research to determine regardless of what T. Keller said - what was the actual quote.   It came from Edith Hamilton's 1937 translation:

“Even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget
falls drop by drop upon the heart…
and in our own despite, against our will,
comes wisdom to us
by the awful grace of God.

The word was Awful.  In fact Robert F. Kennedy used the same quote in his April 4, 1968 speech in Indianapolis after Martin Luther King was assasinated.

Postscript #2  6/23/26  At dinner with J.P. and D.P this discussion came up.  Susan and J.P. kept saying that the ancient meaning of awful and modern meanings are quite different.  J.P. with the help of Perplexity proved their point.  "In that sentence, "awful" means something like "awe-inspiring", overwhelming, even terrifyingly weighty," not "bad" or "disgusting" in the cololoquial modern sense. Historicallly, awful meant full of awe, or worthy of respect or fear and only later drifted toward the everyday meaning "terrible". So "awful grace" names a paradox: grace that is both gracious and crushingly heavy, a gift that comes by way of pain.

Inflation Management

Jenna and I discussed inflation after a complete day of swim lessons and an afternoon of "quiet time" with her boys.  Interesting that Jenna (a Milliennial - GenY) is concerned about inflation given that from college to now her actual realized inflation rate (13 yrs) is only 2.79% but close to my comment of thinking I have experienced 3% over my 50 years.

Later I looked up my personal inflation since college (1976 -2026) of 50 years. The exact data based result using CPI is that $1 in 1976 is equivalent to $5.85 today or 3.6% compounded.   My gut guess of 3% was low.

It's hard to remember prices out of college, however -  my first new car a 1976 Buick Regal was $5K; my first house in Hyde Park 1980 was $75K ; coffee at the office was subsidized $0.10 but normally $0.50; at college a pitcher of 3.2 beer was $1.50.

So what are the big wealth destroyers - inflation, healthcare, taxes and.... mis managing your money.

My Wisnerism Vistage quote related to this topic:

"Manage your money or it will manage you."

AI Stopping Point

I have been pondering why should there be any worry about AI in its recursive self improvement (RSI).  Isn't human intelligence (both individually and collectively) just a recursive self improvement process also?

Not so says Copilot.  "Humans absolutely show feedback-driven self-improvement and learning how to learn = a recursive pattern.  BUT.... RSI is defined more narrowly:  A system improves the MECHANISM that creates the improvement, autonomously and repeatedly."

1. Humans don't directly rewrite their "code".  You can't redesign your brain.

2, The loop isn't fully self-directed.  RSI does self modification without external input. Humans are heavily external input not fully internal.

3. No guaranteed acceleration .  RSI increases the rate of future improvements after each improvement.  Humans improve rapidly in early life but plateau or even decline.

Bottom line RSI upgrades the engine, not just the performance and outcome.

BUT - what "stops" RSI within AI?  Recursion is an infinite "black hole" - self reference can go on forever without a base case or energy constraints.  What then is AI's stopping condition?

Copilot answers this- "In current AI systems, the base case/stopping rule is not magically discovered by the model itself - it is normally defined BY HUMANS through goals, tests, validation criteria, and resource limits.  Current systems can do pieces of self-improvement, but they do not yet close the full loop automomously."

And that is why we need to put some guard rails on AI. Stopping must still be enforced by human-defined objectives, validation tests, and resource or safety limits.  The Pope's 240 page Encyclical Letter about AI is worth attention - even if lazily I let NotebookLM do my thinking :)
